Science Scholars

If you are thinking about graduate school, pursuing a research-based Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), getting started in research as an undergraduate is the most valuable thing you can do. This will also provide valuable skills you can bring to industry.

With the Kennedy College of Sciences (KCS) Science Scholars program, rising sophomore through rising senior students with a major in the Kennedy College of Sciences may apply for a stipend to support their work with a faculty member in the college.

Students will present their research at a student research symposium and may have the opportunity to submit their work for publishing in a journal or at an external conference.

Selected students will be awarded a stipend of up to $5,000 to support their work.

Requirements:

• You are an undergraduate student with a major in the Kennedy College of Sciences in good academic standing.
• You are legally authorized to work in the United States.
• You must be returning as a student at UMass Lowell (UML).
• You will work under the supervision of full-time KCS faculty member(s) on a mutually agreed project.
• You will prepare a 3- to 5-page report on your activities before your contract finishes.

How to apply:

Please reach out to faculty members with whom you may be interested in working in advance of the spring application cycle to discuss possibilities of working with them. Some faculty also have their own funding to support you outside of the KCS Science Scholars program.

The KCS Science Scholars program provides an award for work during the summer. The application cycle occurs in mid-spring. All KCS undergraduates will receive an email with instructions when applications are open.
